Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Text recognition program, assumes work with 179 languages
  • After the text has been processed, the option to save it and send it by mail or publish it on the Internet is available
  • Built-in tools for enhancing the quality of photos and images
  • Precise recognition of pdf, scans and images thanks to Abbyy OCR technology
  • Supports conversion of converted text into PDF, DOC, RTF, XLS and HTML
  • The program supports recognition of documents received from MFPs, scanners, digital cameras and even cell phones
  • Software automatically recognizes different languages in the same document
  • Useful add-ons, such as ABBYY Screenshot Reader and others
  • Document layout as well as style is saved, with the subsequent possibility of launching it through Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
Cons
  • Trial version of the program, has a limited validity period and reduced functionality on top of the license
  • Abbyy products require registration and are distributed with a subscription
  • It is rather difficult to edit text in the Abbyy Fine Reader, it is better to recognize it from a picture and convert it into Word
  • Conversion often "kills" the normal formatting and shifts the headers and footers of the original printed text

More about FineReader

FineReader can do the following things:

  • Recognize the text content of a photo, scan, or PDF and translate that into an editable electronic format;
  • save the results in popular text and image formats, including .djvu;
  • choose specific fragments for recognition and saving;
  • detect spelling mistakes and underline them (not available for all recognized languages, but only for the most widespread ones, the list of which is available in the settings);
  • provide possibility to add comments to scanned texts, put protection on saved documents, fill out forms in electronic versions, etc;
  • store the results of recognition in the own cloud storage, from where they can be downloaded, sent or opened for editing to the selected users;
  • verify the results, put watermarks on scans and text e-documents after their processing.

In the program settings, you can set automation options for the same type of documents so that you don't have to do the same things manually every time.

The program has a mobile app, which is coordinated with the computer version through an account and cloud storage linked to it. There is also an online version, i.e. installing FineReader is not necessary.

FineReader is a handy program for those who need to convert paper documents into electronic format with the possibility of editing. Its disadvantage can be called a paid basis, but there is a free limit for one-time work (10 pages as a gift for registration and another 5 pages every month).
