More about PowerArchiver

You've probably seen quite a few archives stored in RAR format, which PowerArchiver will also be able to build for you. This means that you don't need to install a separate RAR extension utility.

Those who download archives from the Internet on a fairly regular basis may run into CBZ archives, which are comic strips stored in the traditional DEFLATE format. Using PowerArchiver, you can break them up into component files or assemble huge batches of images into your own books for use with an ebook that supports this format.

Naturally, this means you can also work with traditional ZIP files. Although Windows supports these archives, it's handy to have a special tool that handles all the types of archives you might encounter. Many people use the ZIP format to send files online, so you'll be pleased to know that PowerArchiver can usually compress ZIP archives harder than most other utilities.

If you value performance over compression, you can adjust the solid block size and total token dictionary measurement for each archive you create. This is a very powerful feature, made even more powerful by PowerArchiver's support for command line arguments.

Since all of the application's default settings work perfectly, you never have to customize these settings. In fact, the vast majority of people will probably never have a reason to even look at the PowerArchiver properties page. However, power users will be very pleased with the advanced features it has.

The package also includes a number of other tools that may not be as useful. For example, the integrated file manager probably won't be very useful because the application has a simple context menu integration option that is set by default. If you're used to right-clicking a file and selecting the option to add it to a compressed folder, then using PowerArchiver won't be more difficult for you than this one.

Pros:

  • Works with dozens of file extensions.
  • Saves disk space.
  • Works fast enough.
  • Decompresses files on the fly.
  • Features a password system.

That said, file system specialists and some others can use these advanced features to learn the inner workings of any NTFS volume. When you format an NTFS partition, Windows adds some hidden files to the root directory of the specified partition. The PowerArchiver utility will actually let you see this.

The best part is that it is quite portable and should help you read archives created by people who use other operating systems. Let's say you have a friend who has an Apple Macintosh computer and he's trying to send you compressed folders with a .tar.gz extension. Just right click on them and PowerArchiver will do the rest.
