In 2013, the indie video game studio Shiro Games decided to show the industry its unique project, designed to show how and by what stages the game industry developed in the beginning - and at the same time to offer players a cute, quite naive and light adventure called Evoland. The game was very warmly received by critics and players, after which development of the sequel began immediately. Evoland 2 was released in 2015 and immediately repeated the success of the original project.
Genre-wise, the game is a very interesting "hodgepodge", the predominant ingredient of which is JRPG - Japanese role-playing game. You probably heard about the legendary representatives of this genre - The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger. It is from these games the project borrowed most of its mechanics and beautifully presented to the modern player, a little modernizing them, but leaving them unchanged ideologically.
The advantages of the project:
The game will be of particular interest to those who caught the projects it replicates for almost educational purposes. It doesn't matter if you were a kid at the time - fond memories are assured. Evoland 2 has taken only the best and most memorable things from its inspirers - from game mechanics to design decisions and Easter eggs.
If you have played the previous project by Shiro Games, then you will definitely like the sequel - it is made by the principle "the same, but multiplied by two". The gameplay is divided into approximately equal, exciting sections, dramatically different content and mechanics. Despite the fact that the game has its own interesting storyline, gameplay-wise the project feels like a unique retro anthology.
Evoland 2 does not discount itself at the expense of the fact that this particular dylogy happened to open players such an approach to retro gaming - it is not just an excursion into the past, but also a full-fledged game. There are the necessary attributes of a good modern game, such as an excellent story, interesting characters, elaborated universe and a lot of opportunities for the player.
You should play Evoland 2 if you:
If you've never been familiar with the old games, this is a great opportunity to add to your cultural code and maybe get interested in other projects on the topic.
